Independent technical SEO and digital growth, built for the devices people actually own
The Trust Gap is a Level 1 B-BBEE independent digital consultancy based in Cape Town. We work on one problem: the distance between how a digital platform is built and how its customers actually behave.
That distance usually shows up in numbers. Mobile carries most sessions and converts at roughly two-thirds the desktop rate, and most of that gap sits in checkout and signup rather than browsing. It is rarely a content problem. It is server response, database performance, site architecture, rendering, and a funnel designed for a device the customer is not holding. We find those problems and we specify the fix in terms the people who have to build it can act on.
What we do
Digital Strategy, Planning and Technical SEO across the full stack. Server configuration and response times, database and query performance, log analysis, crawl budget, indexation, URL and faceted navigation architecture, Core Web Vitals and frontend rendering. The constraints on organic performance at scale usually sit below the CMS.
Answer and generative engine optimisation. Structured data, entity consistency and retrievability, so brands are cited by answer and generative engines rather than only ranked by classic search.
Mobile growth and retention. Audience segmentation by device tier, data cost and connection quality, then building to that reality. Where the context calls for it, that means plain-HTML performance, progressive web apps, WhatsApp and USSD funnels rather than a heavier app.
Data and experimentation. Defined hypotheses with a stated expected effect, fixed parameters and a measurement window agreed before the test runs. Results read against GA4, Search Console and third-party competitor data. A failed experiment is a finding, not something to reframe.
Paid and organic alignment. Making visible where paid and organic compete for the same terms, so spend moves to what compounds and blended acquisition cost comes down.

The African market practice
Africa is where we have done the most work and where the mobile problem is hardest. It sharpens everything else we do. Africa’s online market is growing quickly and splitting in two directions at once. Most organisations build for one of these customers and lose the other.
The mass market. Over 90% of African internet users are on mid- to low-end Android and Chinese devices, predominantly on 2G and 3G prepaid data. Fewer than 15% meet the device and connectivity assumptions built into most digital platforms. This segment needs speed, reliability and visible trust signals, in its own languages, with images of real customers and staff. It is not an emerging segment to plan for. It is the majority of the addressable market today, and the one platforms are least equipped to serve.
The high-income market. The same countries hold a segment on premium devices and high-speed connections whose behaviour closely resembles European and Gulf customers. They move across devices, take their time making decisions, and respond to curation and storytelling rather than discounting. Reaching them requires cross-device journey mapping and personalisation, not a lighter version of the mass-market experience.
We help your team serve both from one platform or create a dedicated interface for the two customer types for those who choose to operate in one distinct segment.
Where we have done it
Strategy, planning and implementation across:
- Online betting and online casino: organic search engagement for a major South African operator, covering technical SEO, off-site authority building, affiliate and PR strategy, and content planning around the major sporting calendars. Delivered 30%+ year-on-year growth and stability.
- Fintech: acquisition and retention for mobile-first financial products, including the trust signals and data-light performance the mass market requires.
- Higher education: organic social strategy, planning and implementation for one of Africa’s leading business schools, increasing leads and returning customers.
- Travel and tourism: organic search and social for safari and wildlife accommodation operators selling into international markets.
- Accessibility and compliance: PIVOT, a digital audit and compliance tool helping organisations assess their readiness to employ and accommodate people with conditions affecting work capacity, incubated by UCT’s research and innovation team.
- Classifieds and marketplaces: technical SEO leadership across pan-African classifieds platforms spanning multiple countries, categories and languages.
Europe and the Gulf
The same discipline applies in markets with faster networks and different constraints.
In Europe, the constraint is rarely bandwidth. It is render-blocking scripts, third-party tags, consent-mode effects on measurement, and checkout flows that were designed on a desktop. In the Gulf, where the UAE holds some of the fastest median mobile speeds in the world, the constraints are similar, with Arabic and right-to-left implementation added.
We have delivered in both. That includes managing senior European development teams remotely from South Africa, working within GDPR constraints on GIZ- and EU-funded digital projects, and group-level search work for brands across Africa, Asia and Europe. Cape Town sits one hour behind Central European Time and two to three hours ahead of the Gulf, which makes a working day that overlaps with both.
